๐ช Micklegate Stabbing: Man Charged, Victim Still Critical - A 30-year-old York man has been charged with wounding with intent after a victim in his 40s was found with stab wounds at an address in the Micklegate area on 19th February. The victim remains in a critical condition. The charged man appeared at York Magistrates' Court on February 28.
๐ Air Ambulance Scrambled to Asda Monks Cross - Yorkshire Air Ambulance landed in the Asda Superstore car park at Monks Cross Shopping Park at around 1 pm on Sunday. Four police cars and two ambulances were also at the scene to assist a customer. Authorities are yet to confirm the patient's condition.

๐ถ Riverside Walkway Closure Extended - Again: The beloved footpath from North Street Gardens to Ouse Bridge has been shut for another three weeks - now closed until midnight on Friday 20th March - due to ongoing structural defects. The City of York Council has earmarked ยฃ130,000 for a full structural assessment as part of its 2026/27 budget plans.
โฟ Christmas Market Blue Badge Row Heads to Council - A political row is brewing ahead of tomorrow's council executive meeting (March 3), where proposals to change how the York Christmas Market operates go to a vote. Plans include extra Blue Badge parking at Duncombe Place, Deangate and Piccadilly, dedicated quiet zones, and potentially shorter running days for the market. The Lib Dem opposition accuses Labour of breaking a pledge to protect Blue Badge access.

๐ Micklegate to Close to Traffic for Two Weeks - Drivers are on notice, a stretch of Micklegate between Priory Street and Bar Lane will shut from midnight on Monday, 9th March until 11:59 pm on Monday, 23rd March for sewer works. Cyclists and pedestrians keep access throughout. Diversions will run via Nunnery Lane, Skeldergate Bridge, Clifford Street and Low Ousegate.
๐ง A59 Speed Limit Change Near Hessay; Drivers on the A59 near Hessay should prepare for a temporary 40mph speed limit from 9:15 am Monday, 9th March to 4 pm Tuesday, 10th March, while telecom works are completed. Traffic signs will be in place to alert motorists.
๐ ฟ๏ธ Police Warn Haxby Road Drivers Over Pavement Parking - North Yorkshire Police were called to Haxby Road on Saturday after multiple complaints about cars blocking pavements near York St John University Sports Fields. Officers entered the sports grounds and asked drivers to reposition vehicles, but some still refused to move. Police reminded visitors that obstructing pavements puts wheelchair users, pushchair users and visually impaired pedestrians directly at risk.
โ๏ธ York MP Offers Help to Residents with Loved Ones Stranded in the Middle East - Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume is urging residents to contact her office if they have family or loved ones stranded in the Middle East following the suspension of flights into Dubai and retaliatory regional attacks. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Emirates have all cancelled flights to the region. Around 18,000 flights worldwide are currently affected.

๐ฎ North Yorkshire Officer Faces Gross Misconduct Over Harassment Claims - PC John Axcell of North Yorkshire Police is due to face a four-day gross misconduct hearing on Monday, 9th March. He is alleged to have persistently contacted a former partner between August and December 2023 via WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, even after being blocked, reportedly creating an alternative TikTok profile to continue the messages.

๐ฏ๏ธ Selby Rail Disaster: 25 Years On, York Remembers - Saturday marked the 25th anniversary of the Great Heck rail disaster, the worst rail accident of the 21st century in the UK, which claimed the lives of 10 men and injured 82. Around 200 people gathered at Selby Abbey for a memorial service, with candles lit for each of the 10 victims. Families, rail workers, and emergency responders attended, and King Charles sent his "heartfelt prayers" to those gathered via letter.

๐ York Couple Complete Historic John O'Groats to Monte Carlo Rally - Retired York traffic officer John Clayton and his wife Jackie have completed the Anniversary Monte 100 Classique, a 1,500-mile non-competitive rally from John O'Groats to Monaco, in a rebuilt 1976 Ford Escort, marking the race's 100th anniversary. The pair passed through Stirling Castle, Roman roads, the Alps and the famous Col de Turini before parking on the Monaco marina front for a black-tie dinner with the Motoring Club of Monaco. John said: "The whole thing was phenomenal - I've never ever rallied like that."

๐ York's AgriSound Goes Global - Now in a Dozen Countries; York-based agri-tech start-up AgriSound, which uses precision acoustic listening devices to monitor pollinator activity like bees and hoverflies, is now exporting its technology to around a dozen countries, from almond farms in the USA to cotton fields in India and avocado farms in South Africa. Founder Casey Woodward says York sits in the heart of a thriving agri-tech ecosystem, but warns that UK start-ups face "a really challenging time" competing against better-funded US and Israeli rivals.

๐ฐ Tourist Tax: York Business Boss Warns of "Layering on Costs" - The debate over a proposed visitor levy for York and North Yorkshire is heating up, with a major York business owner warning the tax would pile additional financial pressure onto an already-stretched hospitality sector. Four Conservative MPs, including Rishi Sunak, have written to Mayor David Skaith calling the levy "simply wrong in principle" and demanding it be paused. Meanwhile, 71% of businesses surveyed by North Yorkshire Council opposed the idea.

๐บ Ye Olde Starre Inn Sign Set for a Modern Makeover; One of York's most photographed landmarks could soon get a fresh look. Greene King has submitted a planning application to update the iconic sign spanning Stonegate at the Ye Olde Starre Inn, York's oldest licensed pub, dating to 1644. The proposed design features gold lettering on a green background with a red star, plus new entrance signage and a star added to the beer garden.

๐ New Care Home Opening in York This April: Clifton Hall Care Home is set to open on Shipton Road in April, on the former site of the Lime Trees Medical Centre. Operated by Yorkare Homes, the 60-bed facility will offer residential, dementia and respite care, plus day care. The building features communal lounges, an on-site hairdresser, a cinema room and landscaped gardens, and will employ 75 staff at full capacity.
๐ฆพ Pocklington Teen Gets Life-Changing Bionic Arm; Lexi Medforth, 13, from Pocklington, was born without her left hand due to amniotic band syndrome, but has just received a Hero Pro bionic arm after her community rallied to raise ยฃ20,000. The multi-grip arm uses sensors to detect muscle movements. Lexi, who visited the Open Bionics clinic in Bristol on 25th February, said: "I've been doing things I could only dream of, brushing my teeth, eating pizza and shaking someone's hand."

๐ฆธ Comic Con Brings Thousands to York Racecourse: Thousands of fans descended on The Knavesmire for York's Comic Con on Sunday, with cosplayers dressed as Chewbacca, Batman, Wolverine, and Death Eaters roaming the halls. Marvel star James D'Arcy and Tracy Beaker actress Dani Harmer were among the celebrity guests. Unleashed Events organise the annual eventorganises and covers everything from sci-fi to anime, gaming, and fantasy.

๐ด๐ต York City: 24 Unbeaten! Banks' 99th-Minute Miracle Keeps Minstermen Top; What. A. Game. Ollie Banks volleyed home a Josh Stones cross in the 99th minute to seal a 1-0 win for York City away at Morecambe on Saturday, keeping the Minstermen top of the National League and extending their unbeaten league run to a record-breaking 24 games. It was also York's ninth successive victory, another club record. Morecambe had a man sent off in the 54th minute, but somehow held on until Banks broke their hearts at the death.
