📰 NEWS

⚠️ Station Gateway: £28.5 Million Over Budget - Critical Audit Verdict - The council's flagship Station Gateway regeneration scheme is in serious trouble. An audit by Veritau has delivered the most severe possible "critical" finding, revealing the project is now a staggering £28.5 million over budget, more than double its original cost. The audit found the council entered the construction contract "at risk" before legal agreements were in place, made mid-project design changes that drove up costs, and failed to report financial pressures in a timely way. The row goes before the council's Audit & Governance Committee this Wednesday (11 March). Labour's Cllr Katie Lomas and Lib Dem deputy leader Cllr Paula Widdowson are trading blame, with millions already diverted from other York infrastructure projects to plug the hole.

🚧 Micklegate Closes for Three Weeks - Here's Your Diversion Part of Micklegate is closed from today (9 March) until Monday 23 March at 5pm, - between its junctions with Priory Street and Bar Lane. The closure is for sewer works directly linked to the new SuperCity Aparthotel development. Cyclists and pedestrians keep access throughout. Diverted vehicles should follow signs via Nunnery Lane, Bishopgate Street, Skeldergate Bridge, Tower Street, Clifford Street, Nessgate, Low Ousegate and Bridge Street. The aparthotel itself is replacing former vacant units including the old Minster Vans property and is expected to create around 45 new jobs. Queries to highway.regulation@york.gov.uk.

💷 Council Approves £4.8m Crisis & Resilience Fund - City of York Council has greenlit a new three-year Crisis and Resilience Fund running from April 2026 to March 2029, providing £1.587 million per year to support residents facing financial shocks. The fund covers emergency grants approved within 24 hours, housing payments, resilience services, and community coordination. It replaces several existing schemes, including the York Financial Assistance Scheme and Household Support Fund. Applications open 1 April - more info at york.gov.uk/CRF.

🛢️ North Yorkshire MPs Demand Government Action on Heating Oil Crisis - Two North Yorkshire MPs have written to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband urging action over heating oil prices that have more than doubled since Middle East conflict escalated. Labour's Keir Mather (Selby) says around 8,500 homes in his constituency rely on heating oil and are completely unprotected, while Conservative Julian Smith (Ripon) raised the matter directly in Parliament. Miliband has since written to the fuel distributors' trade association, and the Competition and Markets Authority is now gathering evidence on whether consumers are being treated fairly. Via YorkMix

“There are around 8500 homes off the gas grid in our constituency and many of them rely on heating oil. I’ve written to the Energy Department on behalf of local people to ask what the government can do to help.”

🏠 Hundreds of New Homes Proposed for Huntington - Plans for hundreds of new homes in Huntington as part of a 10-year development programme are under community discussion, with mixed views emerging on the scale of the proposals.

🏛️ HERITAGE

⛪ York Minster Marks 800 Years of St William of York - York Minster is preparing to mark the 800th anniversary of the canonisation of St William of York, the city's patron saint, with a major service of Choral Evensong on Wednesday 18 March at 5.30pm in the Nave. The Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell will preach, with the Roman Catholic Bishop of Leeds also in attendance. Fragments of St William's lost shrines return to the Minster for the first time in 500 years, on loan from York Museums Trust. The evening also includes the launch of a new book on the iconic St William Window. All are welcome — no tickets required.

🏛️ York's Medieval Guildhall Was Built on Jewish-Christian Cooperation - A new University of York study published in the Journal of Medieval History has uncovered previously unstudied charters showing that York's Jewish community played a central role in acquiring the building that became the Guildhall - just decades after the 1190 massacre at Clifford's Tower. Dr John Jenkins and Dr Louise Hampson found that leading Jewish figure Aaron of York cooperated with York Minster clergy to purchase the site in 1231, as part of a symbolic three-way exchange that also funded the Minster's famous Five Sisters Window. Extraordinary.

👥 COMMUNITY

🌳 The Island Charity Sells Huntington Site - Green Belt Concerns Raised - York charity The Island has shelved plans to build a children's centre on its nearly four-acre site off New Lane, Huntington, citing spiralling costs, and has put the land up for sale. The charity will continue its core mentoring service for vulnerable children, but residents and councillors are raising concerns about the green belt land's future. Cllr Tony Fisher warned that his previous vote to allow The Island scheme should not be seen as a green light for housing.

⚽ Door 84 Youth Club: Just £2,800 Away From New All-Weather Pitch - York youth club Door 84 in Lowther Street, the Groves, is nearly there. The club, which has served young people since the 1930s, has been fundraising for a community all-weather sports pitch. After a £30,000 grant from York & North Yorkshire Combined Authority, £5,000 from York Children's Trust, and £1,000 from Minster Lions, they're just £2,800 short of their total. The pitch would be open to community groups and the public, making sport accessible to young people in central York who can't afford out-of-school clubs. Support their Crowdfunder here.

🌿 ENVIRONMENT

🪵 Askham Bog Protection Fund Launched - £250K Target - Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has launched an appeal to raise £250,000 to protect Askham Bog, York's oldest nature reserve, championed by Sir David Attenborough as Yorkshire's "cathedral of nature conservation." The bog, which sits just two miles from the Minster inside the ring road, faces growing risk as its peat dries out under climate pressures. The reserve is currently closed for major boardwalk renovations and hopes to reopen this summer, in Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's 80th anniversary year. Donate and find out more at ywt.org.uk.
